- The Alpha Slot also offers a Level Shift with Tier 3 and 4 versions of the power, which makes you effectively one level higher than your “current” level. This Level Shift applies to any City of Heroes content when exemplared to level 45 or higher. I’ll have more to say about that in the section on advice for new Incarnates.
- 6 slot it, hold ctrl and click the power to make it auto. Will drain 20 end every 2 minutes when it dies, but it's well worth it. This also allows you to perma Dull Pain with only 4 slots instead of 6 in that. Stamina (auto): Regen uses alot of end. Take this, 6 slot it, your end problems should go away.
The Alpha Slot is the first 'level' of the Incarnate System which launched with Issue 19. The Alpha Slot includes a Level Shift at higher tiers.
The Common and Uncommon boosts were released with Issue 19; the Rare and Very Rare boosts were released with the Strike Pack, a post Issue 19 update on February 2, 2011.
If you are above level 50 and have the incarnate system unlocked you will be rewarded a Notice of the Well which is used in Rare and Very Rare Alpha Slot boosts. These rewards are only given once per week per character. However, there is a series of 3 badges that you can get for doing the weekly strike target repeatedly.
Alpha Slot Benefits
The Alpha Slot can be unlocked by defeating foes at level 50. It used to be normally unlocked by completing Mender Ramiel's arc, which is still interesting since it introduces players to the Incarnate System by advancing the in-game story-line and lore, and explaining the mechanics of how the Incarnate System works.
A character can access their Incarnate Abilities Window even before any Incarnate Slots are unlocked, where they can manage all their Incarnate abilities.
Once the Alpha Slot is unlocked, the character:
- can fill the Alpha Slot with an Alpha Slot Ability which can grant universal power aspect enhancements, a level shift, and bonuses to certain in-game tasks.
- starts getting Incarnate Shards as a drop from defeating foes.
- starts getting Incarnate Components or Incarnate Shards as a reward for certain Raids and Task Forces.
- can access a third build.
- can join activities restricted to Incarnates. This includes the Tin Mage and Apex Task Forces.
- If the Alpha Slot is empty, the character suffers from a -4 Level Shift during these activities.
- If the Alpha Slot has an ability slotted, the character does not suffer from the negative shift during these activities.
- can receive the Notice of the Well Incarnate Component from the Weekly Strike Target.
The Unlocking Process
The normal course of unlocking the Alpha Slot follows this general plan:
- Optionally run Mender Ramiel's arc to get some backstory and get the character's first Incarnate Shard
- Determine which Alpha Slot Ability works best for said character. That will determine which Incarnate Components are required to craft.
- Gain Veteran Levels to get Incarnate Threads and Empyrean Merits; defeat enemies (who con even or higher) to get Incarnate Shards or Threads; and/or run Incarnate Trials, endgame Task Forces, or missions in Dark Astoria to get Incarnate Components.
- Craft and equip the Alpha Slot Ability.
- The character can now work towards another or a higher tiered Alpha Slot Ability.
Alpha Slot Mechanics
- With regard to the Tin Mage and Apex Task Forces, a character is prevented by the game from joining if they do not have the Alpha Slot unlocked. If the Alpha Slot is unlocked, but is not slotted with an Alpha Slot Ability, then they can participate, but at a -4 Level Shift. Thus, they will be at eight levels lower than the Level 54 foes, hitting at 5% of their normal damage due to the Purple Patch.
- All Common and Uncommon Alpha Incarnate Components can be crafted from Incarnate Shards; therefore, no one specific Raid or Task Force is required to create a Common or Uncommon Ability. They can also be crafted from Incarnate Threads. Because Shards can only be used for the Alpha Slot, it is best to craft Components for it from Shards where possible, but drop rates mean it is unlikely that Shards will be sufficient.
- Rare-tier Alpha abilities require a Notice of the Well uncommon salvage which can be acquired by running the Weekly Strike Target.
- Very Rare-tier Alpha Abilities require a Favor of the Well that can be crafted from two Notice of the Well; it also consumes any two Rare-tier Alphas in order to craft the Very Rare one.
- The reason why the Incarnate Component Gr'ai Matter can be bought with Vanguard Merits is because the Rikti Mothership Raid doesn't have a reward table for completing it.
- Characters can switch between Alpha Abilities by simply equipping a new ability. The old ability is not lost, but simply switched out. There is a 5 minute cool down between equips. Also, equipping an ability is prohibited by being in combat and may require additional cool down time or leaving the mission to equip.
- The Alpha Ability cannot be slotted or changed in Ouroboros.
- Higher-tier Alpha Abilities consume a lower tier ability when crafted. Characters can have several higher-tiered abilities, but if they're in the same 'tree', then they'll have to re-craft the lower tiered ability again for each higher-tiered ability they want to have.

Historical
This article or section contains information about changes that took place in City of Heroes/Villains. It is provided for historical purposes. |
- The Alpha Slot was initially supposed to launch with Going Rogue, but beta feedback said without content to play with the Alpha Slot, the system felt incomplete, so it was pushed back[1].
- The Alpha Slot was added to the game in Issue 19; at that time, the only way to unlock it was via Mender Ramiel's story arc.
- When Incarnate Experience was added to the game as a reward from the Lambda Sector and Behavioral Adjustment Facility Trials in Issue 20, the Alpha Slot was also made unlockable via both Psychic and Physical Incarnate Experience.
- When Incarnate Merit Vendors were added to the game in Issue 20.5, an Unlock Alpha Slot Token was made available for 5 Astral Merits. This token can be purchased by any character on an account, and is awarded as a Character Item.

--I have just discovered with the new NCSoft brainchild of 'City Of Heroes Freedom' that people who have what they call 'Premium' accounts, that is accounts that have been paid for over the years but under their new 'Freedom' system will only be allowed to have 2 characters that you pick when the new 'Freedom' goes through per server.
--If you want to access any more than that you will have to pay as you did before. And you can only have 12 characters per account. (The most I have ever had on one server is 12. I have 3 servers filled up with 12 each). There may be more available for those with the 'Premium' account if you have had some unlocking veteran rewards.

'Free to Play' accounts will allow 2 of the characters on the account to be used/played. You will get to choose those two the first time you access the game after this service change has been made live/implemented. Once you choose them, all other character slots on the account will become locked/grayed out/unavailable until you do one of the following:
1. Claim Veteran Reward based character slots. (Applies immediately, unlocks more character slots on the account for use.)
2. Purchase extra character slots through the City of Heroes Store. (Applies immediately, unlocks more character slots on the account for use.)
3. Upgrade your account to 'VIP' status. (This will unlock a total of 12 slots per server, plus slots claimed through Veteran Rewards or purchased through the City of Heroes Store.)
The relation that Veteran Rewards has in connection with the 'City of Heroes: Freedom' service model is that any character slots claimed through Veteran Rewards will add to the base total of 2 available for 'Free to Play' accounts.

--This is not so much a 'Freedom' but a taking away of 'Freedom' to those who have invested their $143.00 per year for 7 years.

--After not surviving NCSoft's Lineage 2 game in which I lost over 25 characters in two (2) server merges I am expecting the same sort of thing to happen here. What NCSoft says and what they do are 2 completely different things.
--I have met many a player in-game who has many more than my 7 servers with 12 characters on it, and I am wondering how they feel about the situation.
--When will be the first server merge for 'City Of Heroes' after the 'City Of Heroes Freedom' implemenation?

--How many characters will the long time players lose while NCSoft throws their EULA in their faces?
--What they are basically doing is making more business for Blizzard Entertainment and 'World Of Warcraft'. Why? Because there is security there. If you compare NCSoft's record with what has happened to their players to that of Blizzards you may find something interesting. If you compare how many players lost time and their characters, banning aside, to World Of Warcraft, WOW has security and a 100% improvement on character and time lose compared to NCSoft.
--I am not supporting World of Warcraft saying it is a better game. I have not over time enjoyed WOW as much as I had with my paid for City Of Heroes. I prefer City Of Heroes more.
--Guild Wars is free. You pay for the packs and that is it. I give them some credit for that. But GW is hindered or lacking because of that compared to other MMOs out on the market with what you can do. There is no total 'Freedom' there either. I am betting more packs will be released for GW that you have to purchase.
--I also have to mention here that the game 'Tabula Rasa' which barely lasted 6 months was closed almost immediately after it was launched. Why? Server time vs. cost? Artists, probably unionized, wanting more money? Someone who owns the company suddenly not liking the game anymore? That incident also does not go well with my trust for my characters and time and money spent with a company who seems to have more respect for their EULA then for their customers. Where is the guarantee?
--A broken toy is never the same after it has been broken. Is NCSoft becoming the bully of the play yard? 'Hand over your lunch money my friend and I may let your character live'.
--I believe that COH Freedom should have another name besides 'Freedom'. I see little 'Freedom' in their new system or what they are trying to implement. I feel it is/and will slowly ruin the game. NCSoft has no feelings for their customers or how they feel about their playing time or usage of characters. Along with the new implementation they have succeded in driving away who could have been their best customers and they are becoming what I feel is one of the worst companies in the gaming business. After this new COH implementation I do not think I will be purchasing any of their GW2 too soon.
--Because of NCSoft's track record, I may be staying with WOW where my characters are at least safe.
--I will be writing more on this later. At a later time, I will be more than happy to type a few good things concerning this change over. As for now, my trust is nil.
